Nunapitchuk

Nunapitchuk is located on the Johnson River, approximately 30 air miles away from Bethel, Alaska which is the nearest hub. Nunap, as it is affectionately called, is accessible only by small aircraft, boat and motor, and in the winter by snow machine. Every winter, for a limited time, there is an ice road plowed on the Kuskokwim River to and from Bethel on which trucks/cars are used. 

The present population is about 500+ people, comprised almost entirely of Alaska Natives. Village activities center around the school, the biggest employer and building structure in the village, for the majority of the year from August to May annually. There is one general store and gas station, operated by the village corporation, Nunapitchuk Limited.

Nunapitchuk is governed by Nunapitchuk IRA Council which is the name of the traditional tribal council, and also by City of Nunapitchuk. Under these two entities the community is provided with a police department, laundromat facilities, a village health clinic, sanitation services, water/sewer flush/haul system, IGAP, EPA office, Tribal assistance from AVCP (Association of Village Council Presidents). It is a DRY community, meaning there is an local ordinance that forbids alcohol possession or consumption within the boundaries of the village.
